Municipality Guards protest in Algiers
Hundreds of Municipality Guards’ members, who were recruited in the period between 1995 and 1999 to combat terrorism, decided to close the road adjacent to Carroubier station in Algiers, while security services intervened to surround the situation.
Protesters raised banners condemning what they described as injustice and ignorance against them after the years they spent in order to fight against terrorism, and sacrifices that have been made along five years, asking government to show commitment to the promises which they launched, and which provides for realizing their demands.
Counter-terrorism Members, who belong to the National People’s Army, renewed their call for the President Bouteflika to intervene to redress and to respond to their demands, which they considered legitimate, including full benefit from reconciliation and civil reconciliation laws, issuing the law to give a monthly grant to them, material and moral compensations, the adoption of a health insurance and privileges through health centers, with the settlement of their status towards the services of social security, and allowing them to obtain free loans and a licenses for different exploitation like those held by the War Veterans (Mujahideen).
