NOS:1/3 of Algeria’s population under the age of 15

Over 10 million Algerians of the total 3.36 million inhabitants under the age 15, the National Office of Statistics said here on Monday.

The same source added that the structure of population based on age and sex was characterized by a small decline in the ratio of the category of inhabitants under 15 from 28, 2% in 2009 to 27,8% in 2010.

While the number of population under 20 reaches 13.5 million inhabitants until the end of 201, equivalent to 37.7% of whom 6.6 million are females.

However, the age group of fewer 5 years continued to rise from 10% to 7.10% in the same year.

During the same period, Algeria noticed 887810 new births, including 454037 males and 433773 females.

On the other hand the year 2010 was marked by a decline in the number of deaths reaching 2000 deaths compared to 2009, which explains the decline in the ratio of deaths from 51.4% per thousand to 37.4% per thousand.

Mortality rate among kids continued in the same pace of decline recorded over the past years, from 24.8% per thousand in 2009 to 23.7% per thousand in 2010.

Low mortality rate in kids affects generally the level of life expectancy which rose from 75.5% in 2009 to 76.3% in 2010, i.e. an increase of 9 months according to the same source.
