Number of Algerian students exceeds that of population in 68 countries

Number of Algerian students, who started studies at the beginning of this week, reaches more than a million and 230.000.

Half of this number study in eastern universities of Constantine, Annaba, Setif and Batna.

This huge number does not exist in many countries of the world. In 1820 the number of Algerian population was approximately one million inhabitants, i.e. the number of students in Algeria is equivalent to a whole country.

Those students study in 56 universities, of which only a few university centers, have a special budget for services that is equivalent to the budget of many countries.

It is interesting and important to say that the number of students in Algeria exceeds the population of 68 countries in the world, including those which have seats at the United States, and major countries which even participated in the World Cup or Olympic Games and won medals and broke records with a population less than the number of Algerian students.

State of the Bahamas, lying at the American continent won four gold medals in various Olympic Games, although the latest census shows that there are 350.000 inhabitants in this country.

The Kingdom of Bahrain is one of the richest countries in the world counted 650.000 inhabitants, half of the number of Algerian students.

Even Qatar which will host the World Cup 2022 has a population of 600.000 inhabitants, helf the number of Algerian students.

The phenomenon does not concern only Arab, American and African countries but permeated to Europe. The population of Cyprus is currently 750.000 people, a Mediterranean country which has only 10.000 students, less than the students of an Algerian province like Batna or Telemcen, and the comparison is not featured with the students of large Algerian universities such as Algiers, Oran and Constantine.

The population of Malta is 400.000 inhabitants, Luxemburg 440.000, and Iceland 300.000 inhabitants.

Slovenia which played against Algeria during the last World Cup and deprived us from reaching the second round with a clean goal  has a population of one million and 900.000 inhabitants , away from the number of Algerian students, and of course, in the coming years, the number of Algerian students will exceed that of Slovenian population.

In Africa, we played against countries in friendly and official matches and we also lost in our land, although the number of Algerian students is similar to their populations, such as Gabon which counted one million and 400.000 inhabitants, Gambia which also counted one million and 400.000 inhabitants in 2009.

The area occupied by 56 Algerian universities and 300 residences, is larger than 46 countries in the world such as San Whelan, Andorra and Tonga. However, talking about the budget being spent on this “Educational state” is sad because the Algerian university is currently the only one in the world which offer free education and services like food, residence, transport, internet and entertainment, while the budget for research remains poor.
