The number of Algerians who sought political asylum in France in the year 2016 reached 2,000, according to the report that was prepared by the French office for the protection of refugees and persons without identities, and the French National Assembly (the lower chamber of Parliament).

This figure put Algerian nationals in the ninth place among the nationals of various countries who have made asylum requests in France in this year. As Afghan nationals ranked first with 5,500 asylum seekers, followed by Sudanese, whose number reached 5,400 asylum seekers, and nationals of Haiti by 5,100 asylum seekers, Albanians by 4,200, followed by the Syrians which number reached 3,600, then Congo nationals by 2,500, then Guineans by 2,300 and then Bengali nationals with 2,200 asylum seekers.
This is a very large figure, compared to the countries that advanced Algeria in this statistical report, because the first eight countries are living in wars and stifling crises, what makes citizens search for safety, which is a reasonable reason.
French report did not refer to the identities of  Algerians who have made applications for asylum, but it is common for the Algerians who submit asylum applications in Europe in general and in France in particular, are illegal immigrants who are looking for residency documents, in the hope of better living conditions.
Usually the asylum requests in the European countries are called economic asylum, making the chances to obtain residency documents excluded because the services of immigration usually refuse such requests in a short period, because they are certain that they are not exposed to the dangers that threaten their life in their countries.
However, the problem, which is usually facing European countries in the deportation of these people, is the absence of identity documents, making their deportation complicated, especially in light of the unwillingness of Algeria to gave the documents of acceptance, for fear of receiving citizens of other nationalities.
