Physical abuses on the rise in Algeria, estimates reveal
The national gendarmerie services have treated 100 cases related to children assault over their parents during the first quarter of the current year, while 283 were registered last year leading to the arrest of 295 people, 167 of them were remanded in custody most of them youngsters aged 18 to 30 years old.

A survey carried out by the communication cell at the national gendarmerie has revealed that 3255 cases have been treated over the period ranging between 2000 and 2009 in relation to grievous bodily harm against one or either parents, leading to the arrest of 3427 individuals, 2024 of them were put in custody while 1403 benefitted from provisional release.

Among the arrested offenders, 2344 are jobless and suffer from social problems and mental ones.

The province of Oran, western Algeria, comes on top of the ranking in terms of cases followed by Setif, Tizi Ouzou, Algiers, Bejaia and Oum Labouaki in the eastern part of the country.

In this respect, sources from the penitentiaries’ General Directorate have revealed that some 8000 prisoners nationwide are serving sentences in relation to GBH. But the number doesn’t exceed 1% of the overall cases because the victims do not declare the facts especially one it comes to sexual assaults.

In a declaration to Echourok, the lawyer Fatima Ben Brahem has indicated that the Algerian legislation issues extremely severe sanctions against the perpetrators of assaults over their parents be it verbal or physical ones.
