President orders inquiry over shady deals at universities
The president Abdelaziz Bouteflika has set up an investigating committee to probe on the numerous financial “scandals†at the higher education and scientific research sector including the transportation department that caused the treasury a loss worth 34 billion ADZ, reliable sources have revealed.

222 shady deals have been sealed in relation to this activity, those sources added.

The investigations that mainly focussed on the transportation services over the period spanning between the period of the liberalisation of the sector to the private operators and beyond, concluded to the involvement of several top university managers scattered across the country like Algiers, Annaba, Oran, M’Sila and Bourdj Bou Arreridj, it said.

The illegal transactions have been sealed with private operators through mutual agreements causing the public treasury an average loss worth 5 million ADZ daily.

The reports have singled out the irregularities surrounding the number of buses used for the transportation of students whose number is supposed to be 520, while the reality of the terrain shows that this number is lesser than that.
