Ramadan series “Memory in the Flesh”: A Big challenge

It is an upscale elitist work which takes us to the depths of the soul and brought us some remaining of the good past times.

• The series raise some controversy among Arab and Algerian people. In Algeria, especially in Constantine, people think that some scenes are exaggerating and the city is not as bad as it has been presented by the artists in their roles. And also because of the some love scenes that surprise the viewers from time to time.

• The city of Constantine, east of Algeria, took a big place in this work, as we see the wedding, where the music and customs and the amazing bridges of the old city and history which face extermination nowadays.

• “I was watching the scene of the wedding in Constantine and I called my mother to come and see women who dance and the famous singer. My mother came and while we were watching a love scene by Amal Bouchoucha and Jamal Suleiman surprises us. My mother left the room and never appeared again”, Salima from Constantine said.

• Other viewers in Algeria think the series are boring, because of some long scenes and given the nature of nowadays way of living and thinking, especially for the new generations.

• “How can I wait for the end of such long and boring scenes? I am like most of Algerians impatient and nervous. Look the scene of the bag. I can’t wait more”, Rachid said.

• Another thing should be noticed, is the kind of songs and singers which do not reflect the period of time for the series, because they are new. It should have been better to choose some old songs like those of the famous singer Mouhammed Tahar fergani.

• The Arab artist and actor Jamal Suleiman succeeded in imposing his presence during this Ramadan through his role in the series “Memory in the Flesh” written by Ahlem Mostaghanemi.

• It seems that these series are a turning point in his career and those of all actors mostly Amal Bouchoucha, as this is her first role drama, and because the series are based on a famous literary novel by the great Algerian writer Ahlam Mostaghanemi, who uses the classic Arabic language in her novels.

• This work was remarkable from the beginning, given the way of portraying the role of a painter “Khaled Toubel” who lost his arm during the Algerian revolutionary war, and then falls in love with a beautiful girl, “Hayat” (Amal Bouchoucha) the daughter of an Algerian freedom fighter, a friend of Khaled during the war, who was killed by the French soldiers.

• Then we see the struggle of “Hayat” facing the Algerian society and traditions, especially after her marriage to a senior officer with a large influence in the Algerian government, also a war veteran.

• The Algerian artist Amal Bouchoucha, “Hayat” in the series, is the daughter of the Algerian martyr who died during the liberation war. She fell in love with a Palestinian journalist and writer who fought for the Palestinian freedom, then died after.

• “Memory in the Flesh” was one day, a dream for the Egyptian actor, Nour El Cherif, who wanted to realize movie after the novel won a number of awards in the mid nineties, but the project was not completed.

• Viewers of the series live a surge in the tragedy which took place in Paris and Constantine, east of Algeria; where the smell of history is mixed with the image of a struggle between love and life.

• It seems that it is time to forget comparison between the novel and series, because for those who did not read the novel, they feel that they are forced to read it and discover more details about the story.

• It was also a big challenge for the Syrian director Najdat Anzour, because it is not easy to realize such a great novel, as we feel that he was obliged to change some points in the novel.

• This work as a whole is not bad and it will play a big role in opening a new era for a new and different kind of drama.

• And it is easy to see that all the actors in the series worked hard to show the contradictions of the figures.
