The National Independent Council of High School Teachers said a large number of schools in southern Algeria and isolated areas do not have foreign language teachers.

“There is a lack of teachers in different subjects in many provinces in Algeria although the school year began more than a month ago and the Algerian national education ministry organized a national examination test to hire teachers in primary, junior and high schools,” Messaoud Boudiba, press attaché at the council told Echorouk.

“This is due to false figures given by education local authorities about the number of needed teachers. Those figures have nothing to do with reality as the number of pupils increases every year,” he added.

He also said teachers have to work for extra hours all the week. Some teachers in primary schools work for 35 hours per week while teachers in junior high schools work for 36 hours and teachers in high schools for 26 hours per week.

According to Boudiba, education local authorities will rely on teachers who have temporary or pre-employment contracts to cover the deficit.

He said pupils in many schools in the south and isolated towns do not learn French language due to the lack of teachers.
