Foreign Minister, Abdelkader Messahel, began, on Wednesday, a working visit to the European institutions in Brussels, to participate in the first session of the high-level dialogue between Algeria and the European Union on regional security and counter terrorism.

A statement from the Foreign Ministry said that Messahel will meet with the Vice-President of the European Commission and the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini and the President of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani.
According to the same sources, Messahel will head the first session of the high-level dialogue between Algeria and the European Union on regional security and counter-terrorism, with the Vice President of the European Commission Federica Mogherini and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Antonio Tajani.
“Messahel will discuss with the President of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani, ways and means to deepen the parliamentary dialogue as the Brussels meeting will be held on Thursday, which is the 16th joint parliamentary meeting between Algeria and the European Union”.
In April 2017, Algeria and the European Union reached a mechanism for security consultation in counter terrorism.
This came during the meeting of the Minister of Maghreb Affairs, the African Union and the League of Arab States, Abdelkader Messahel, with the Commissioner for Foreign and Security Policy in the European Union, Federica Mogherini in Algiers.
“We have agreed to establish a security consultation mechanism between the two sides along the lines of cooperation with our other partners in this area”, Mesahel said after talks with Mogherini.
Messahel did not elaborate on the content of the agreement, but confirmed that, “cooperation between Algeria and the European Union in counter terrorism is very important, and is in continuous expansion”.
For her part, Mogherini confirmed in statements after the meeting that, “We follow the Algerian model in the field of counter-terrorism”.
“Talks also dealt with the Libyan file (…) In this context we share the same approach to resolve the crisis in this country on the basis of political agreement with the participation of all Libyan parties”.
“I discussed with Minister Meshael the migration file, which is a comprehensive phenomenon that concerns not only Europe, but the entire region and countries of origin and countries of asylum”.
“We will continue work on this file in the spirit of partnership and cooperation, according to an agreed methodology”.
On March 13, 2017, the tenth session of the “Algeria-EU Association Council”, was held in Brussels, and was established under the partnership agreement that was signed in 2002 and which entered into force in 2005.
