Sonatrach’s CEO and Deputy-Chairman go to jail
Sonatrach's former CEO Mohamed Meziane

A court in Oran (west of Algiers) Wednesday sentenced former CEO of Algeria’s energy group Sonatrach Mohamed Meziane to two years in prison with one year suspended.

  • Sonatrach’s Deputy Chairman Abdelhafid Faghouli and three executives got prison sentence of 8 months suspended for illegal deal signature and public money squandering between Sonatrach and Safir Company.
  •
  • Previously, an Indian company had won a deal to bring 10 tanks for nitrogen after a tender in favour of Sonatrach. Algerian-French Safir Company benefited from the deal amicably without announcing the tender.
  •
  • Because of that, the County Attorney condemned Mohamed Meziane and Abdelhafid Faghouli. Four years in prison had been sought for Safir’s CEO. The sentences were pronounced on Wednesday.
