Tax Department opens in-depth investigations into citizens' illicit enrichment

The General Management of the Inland Revenue or National Tax Office has decided to open exhaustive investigations into the illicit and swift enrichment by numerous citizens on the basis of testimonies and fact-finding reports worked out by the relevant authorities in various parts of the country. 

• The tax department has set up squads of seasoned investigators to look into the reported cases of sudden and unexpected enrichment by certain people from various sections of society.

• The investigators are entrusted with making a deep perusal of the activities of these unscrupulous and venal people and ascertaining how they grew richer by leaps and bounds.

• All sectors of activity will be scrutinized by the tax investigators who could well find out numerous cases of illicit enrichment resulting from fraud, bribery, corruption, tax evasion, drugs trafficking or money laundering among other serious crimes and breaches of the laws and regulations.

• Cross border smuggling is also suspected of spawning such illicit enrichment in addition to unbridled speculation notably on the ferrous and non ferrous products and on the sale of cement, a rare product over the past few years.

• The tax office investigators also hold the prerogative to diligently scan the bank or post office accounts of those citizens, whatever their profession or social status, who are suspected of illicit enrichment.
