The constitutional amendment suggestions process

The President’s Office may assign the same technical commission which prepared the draft constitution to formulate suggestions presented during consultations, according to lawyers.

Souileh Boudjemaa, a specialist in the constitutional law, the commission will draft a document about the consultations while the final decision will be made by the government.

Earlier in June, Chief of the President’s staff Ahmed Ouyahia conducted consultations with political party leaders and civil society’s organization representatives over Algeria’s new constitution.

Hocine Khaldoun, a law specialist said the treatment of suggestions over the constitutional amendment is not bound by a given legal framework. “Yet, the suggestions may be checked by the same technical commission which prepared the draft constitution.”

A total of 36 national, 64 accredited parties, 10 national organizations, 27 national associations and 12 academics were involved in the consultations.
