The strike at a Chinese oil refinery in Adrar goes on

The unlimited strike initiated by Algerian employees at oil refinery situated at the village of Sbaa, 40 Km north Adrar province, south west Algeria, is still maintained, as the refinery administration has decided, in return, dismissing 100 workers on strike.

  • In fact the union branch at the refinery had called employees to down their tools to demand the same pay as other Chinese counterparts.
  • A short scuffle had broken out between Algerian and Chinese workers in the refinery, yesterday.
  • However, the union said the strike is maintained until they hold a meeting with the Chinese manager of the refinery who is in vacation.
  • The union has required the intervention of the Algerian partner, namely state owned hydrocarbon company Sonatrach.
  • Such a strike has heavily affected the supply of the local market with the fuel produced by the initially 3000 barrel per day refinery.
  • Meanwhile, authorities of the province of Adrar have called dispute parties to calm and dialogue in order to reach a compromise as soon as possible.
  • The refinery is owned jointly by Sonatrach and the Chinese National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC).
