Libya’s neighbor countries assigned Algeria to follow up and treat the Libyan crisis in its military, security and intelligence aspects. So, why was Algeria chosen for this mission? And how can it help Libya?

Although there are seven countries neighboring Libya: Tunisia, Egypt, Sudan, Niger and Chad, the toughest mission was entrusted to Algeria. Egypt is only in charge of following political aspects and providing suitable atmosphere for a dialogue. That means there is a necessity behind the Algerian mission.

Retired officer and professor at the Political Sciences and Information Institute at the Algiers University Ahmed Adimi believes that a set of geopolitical considerations and current situation inside Libya are behind Algeria’s mission.

“Borders between Algeria and Libya are along about 1,000 kilometers while there is no state in Libya,” he told Echorouk on the phone.

“This situation will also be dangerous on neighboring countries and the whole region. Since that the neighboring countries including Egypt are facing crises, Algeria is the most adequate country for this mission,” he added.

He believes that Algeria is the only country capable of building a police system and training soldiers to form a Libyan army.

“Algeria’s army has a long experience in countering terrorism,” he said.
