The national association for the protection of the patriots is due to raise a formal request to the Algerian authorities for an immediate intervention to improve the social and economic condition s of thousands of patriots left on their own over the last years.

In a declaration to “Echourok” the head of this association said that the priority goes to this community notably the disabled and ill ones, who have been considered as “victims of terrorism” and were given ludicrous allowances which do not exceed for some the amount of 4000 Algerian Dinars per month.

Though not confirmed, the associations’ estimates reveal the number of some 70000 patriots were recruited over the years while other sources estimated that the number shrank during the last three years owing to resignations for some while other were deprived of their arms and put in jail in addition to the death of dozens of others following diseases. By and large, the overall number of the patriots slumped to some 55000 troops scattered over 35 localities nationwide.

Well informed sources revealed that the Algerian authorities have started a census of the patriots and social inquests to evaluate their needs and draw a list of beneficiaries from allowances or job reintegration, especially that top officials including the president Abdelaziz Bouteflika  praised the bravery and sacrifice of thousands of patriots in many occasions.

Patriots’ representatives said that thousands of them are living in precarious conditions and didn’t receive their salaries for more month and delays. Those who stood against terrorists in various regions of the country for years are now facing difficulties to feed their families and most of them are marginalized by local authorities.
