Train derails in Algiers killing 1, injuring 70 in Algiers
A passenger train derailed in Algiers on Wednesday, killing a woman and injuring 100 people. Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal ordered to open an urgent investigation and examine the train black box.
At 8:30, a large number of policemen, gendarmes and firefighters were deployed in the accident place. They surrounded it and did not let anyone to pass by. Scientific policemen were seen there as well and took samples.
The train front locomotive was totally destroyed.
According to First Lieutenant at the Civil Protection General Department Sofiane Bakhti, the “suburb train” started its trip at about 7:55 a.m. heading for Thenia in the province of Boumerdes (50 km east of Algiers). At 8:10 a.m, it derailed and came off the tracks killing a 40-year-old woman and injuring 57 passengers.
