University students forward their requests to the president
Groups of students representing 25 universities and colleges from different parts of the country yesterday staged a sit- by the presidential palace in upper Algiers as part of their protest campaign for a radical reform of the university.
- 5 delegates have been selected by the protesters to talk on their behalf and entrusted with forwarding to the presidential staff two letters comprising the requests that remained unfulfilled by the ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research Ministry, so far.
- Dozens of students stood in line peacefully on the sidewalk opposite to the presidential palace and started a dialogue with the police forces on spot. The negotiations wound up with designating 5 delegates among the students to get in the presidential palace in a bid to forward their requests.
- Seemingly, instructions were given to the security forces to avoid clashing with the students whose delegates were received by the presidential staff. Their written requests will be passed on to the president Abdelaziz Bouteflika .
- Meanwhile, the protesters were raising slogans calling for a radical change of the university system and slashed at the complacency attitude of the relevant ministry that grew enable to address their demands.
