World Bank Report: 25% of Algerian youngsters unemployed

The youth employment situation may be quite different from that for adults, involving transitions from school to work and from single to married life. As a result, policy prescriptions for the youth labor market may be quite different than those for adults.

  • The World Bank has called on Algeria and the MENA (Meadle East and North Afirca) countries to make more efforts in conducting economic reforms and to provide more opportunities to productive sectors in order to create jobs for the youth.
  • In the same connection, the World Bank report slammed the private sector’s performance in the region which has not contributed to the reforms underway, in the area.
  • The Financial institution however noted that unemployment among the youth in the MENA countries remains high.
  • 25 % of Algerian youngsters are unemployed according the World Bank report.
  • The North African country registers every year 300 000 to 350 000 new job seekers.
  • All MENA countries experienced demographic trends that contributed to high shares of youth in the working-age population.
  • Also, all MENA countries have low female labor force participation rates compared to other developing regions of the world.
  • Unemployment rates in the MENA region are the highest in the world.
