Algeria will officially announce the creation and the setting up next Sunday of the security organization “Afripol” that will bring together the African regional police organizations of over 25 countries of the African continent.

The creation of this security organization, “Afripol”, is aimed at further strengthening cooperation among police forces from different African countries in their sustained fight against organized crime, terrorism, illegal migration, transnational trafficking networks, maritime piracy , money laundering, cyber crime and all forms of violence, and whose founding legal texts will be formally ratified in Algiers.

The Director General of National Security Services (DGSN),  Major General Abdelghani Hamel,   said that Afripol will be different from other security agencies such as Europol, Asiapol and Américapol, in the sense that it will develop the criminal police, ensure training, upgrade African security services, and spearhead the rehabilitation of the police of some African countries, while emphasizing the role of this newly-formed institution in promoting the values of peace, security and stability across the African continent.

Major General Hamel further stressed that the setting up of “Afripol”, whose headquarters will be based in Algiers, will allow its members to speak with one voice at international level and to develop a common stance so as to play a key role in peacekeeping missions in Africa and to deepen the exchange of views on ways of shoring up bilateral relations among the various police institutions in African countries.
