Informed sources confirmed to “Echorouk” that about 250 thousand imported cars have been stacked for several months now in several ports of the country, pending the finalization of the relevant procedures related to the compliance to the new conditions and criteria contained in the newly-devised specifications book on the part of the car dealerships operating in Algeria as part of the authorities’ recent decision to regulate and streamline vehicles’ import.

The same sources added that among the 250 thousand imported cars currently impounded in the various harbours, about 85 thousand of them are now at a standstill for the above-mentioned reasons at the major port of Djendjen in the eastern part of the country.

And this prolonged stacking process for second-hand and brand-new cars, has triggered off a steep hike in the price of second-hand cars due to the marked depreciation of the Algerian currency, the Dinar, over the past few months on the currency market.

As a result, a large number of citizens expressed apprehension at this untoward situation saying that the unexpected vehicles’ delivery delay and the latest price hikes due to sudden inclusion by the car dealerships of additional taxes in line with the newly-introduced regulations would stifle the market for the years to come.
