Algeria: Marketing of 2 tonnes and a half of spoiled meat during Ramadhan
A court of justice of Algiers has opened a new the file concerning the commercialization of 2 tonnes and 600 kg of spoiled meat by 3 defendants in several Algerian markets during the holy month of fasting of Ramadhan of the year 2011.
The spoiled meat which was destined to the “Al Wiam” zoological garden of Ben Aknoun in upper Algiers was then diverted by several chief workers of the Zoo and sold to various markets through makeshift devices.
The spoiled meat destined to animals in the Zoo, was imported from Argentina and not fit for human consumption, according to investigators.
In its preliminary ruling, the tribunal of Bir Mourad Rais in Algiers, handed down prison sentences ranging between 2 years and 18 months against the 3 arrested people working in the Zoo including a female veterinarian.
The 3 accused were also compelled to pay each a fine amounting to 50 thousand dinars in addition to 1 million dinars in damages to the “Al Wiam” Zoological garden of Ben Aknoun.
