Provided by the law of Finance 2015, the repeal of article 87A of the national labour code will enhance the payrolls of about half a million Algerian workers by 5% to 20%.

According to the Secretary General of the UGTA Abdelmadjid Sidi Saïd, the deletion of this article will have a positive impact on all earnings and will affect all categories of workers spanning 36 sectors of activity.

The planned increase will affect, in a first stage, ‘low wages’ and it will be gradually extended to all employees, revealed Mr Sidi Saïd, who brought together on Wednesday morning in Algiers the representatives of the 30 federations of the Algerian General Workers’ Union (UGTA).

“Initially the salary increase will affect workers included in the category 1 and 7. And since there will be an increase at the base there will will automatically be a hike in all wages to harmonize and streamline the workers’ salary scales”,  Mr Achour Telli, national Secretary of the UGTA explained on the occasion.

According to the same source, “the harmonization of the salary scales will take a little more time and will be the outcome of  negotiations which will be conducted at the level of each national company”.

The procedure will entail the significant financial spin-offs for the workers concerned, after the signing of the relevant draft Executive Decree by Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal and its release later on in the Official Gazette.
