Algeria’s ambassador to Belgium, Amar Belani, revealed Morocco’s efforts to recruit the French lobby in the European Union against Western Sahara by paying luxury residences in Morocco to French officials for standing next to the Moroccan ranks and blocking the decision of the European Court of Justice of December 21, 2016, which states that Western Sahara is a separate territory from Morocco, and that the contractual arrangements that are linking Morocco to the European Union under a peasant agreement, do not therefore apply to the products of this non-independent territory.

In an interview that was published by Afrique-Asie magazine, Belani denounced the technical and legal ambiguities between the European executive body and the Moroccan authorities, which have been going on for months to try to get out of this problem by mobilizing the pro-Moroccan French lobby in the European Union against the Western Sahara issue, in exchange for Moroccan concessions to provide political support for the Moroccan endeavor and to mitigate the impact of the decision of the European Court of Justice.

The Algerian ambassador expressed his indignation by saying that “the result of these secret and mysterious negotiations is a formula that suits to Morocco”, noting that the executive body of the European Union supports the looting of Western Sahara’s wealth by Morocco and, more importantly, its an immoral choice to support indirectly the Moroccan occupation in a territory that no country in the world recognize its sovereignty.
