Ban on rallies, demonstrations and processions in Ghardaia for six month-period open to renewal

Security services have arrested two persons, aged respectively 29 and 50, in Ghardaia, 600 km south of Algeria, announced, this Monday, July 13, a press release from the national police department (DGSN).

“The first person was the subject of an arrest warrant issued by the courts. He is suspected of belonging to “an association of criminals”, adds the release. 

He was also prosecuted for “attempted voluntary homicide and armed gathering. 

The arrested man in his fifties is also suspected of committing a murder during the latest inter-community clashes in the Ghardaia region. 

Police found “a shotgun and ammunition during the search conducted at his home”,adds the release. 

A second firearm and ammunition were recovered by police during searches carried out in several troubled districts of Ghardaïa.

Meanwhile, public events including rallies, sit-ins and processions have been banned in Ghardaia province for a 6-month period open to renewal.

In this context, the Wali or Governor of Ghardaia province has decided to ban demonstrations and gatherings in five municipalities of this southern region including Ghardaia, Guerara, Beriane, Benoura and Dhaya Ben Dhahwa. 

The ban that will extend for six months, covers, ‘public events regardless of their purpose, notably  the shows, motorcades, rallies and sit-ins. 

The decision was taken on 12 July by the provincial authorities of Ghardaïa.
