The National Veterinary Union warned against the adverse ways of fattening the sheep meant for sacrifice during the upcoming Eid El Adha religious feast by sheep breeders for their quick financial profit without taking into account the consumer’s health.

A representative of the Union Mr. Nadjib Dahmane said in this respect that there are risks in the sale of the sheep and it is impossible for the veterinarians to monitor them with the naked eye or via the external examination, in order to detect fraud, that threaten the consumers’ health with all kinds of strange diseases stemming from nefarious hormone pills, injections and the remains of rotten chicken food so as to fatten the livestock meant for Eid ritual sacrifice.

The National Veterinary Union recalled the rotting of the meat of numerous sheep during last year’s Eid religious festival, due to female hormones smuggled across the Tunisian border into Algeria, with which sheep and cattle were injected.

It pointed to the absence of the Anamat blood analysis laboratories conducted on those sheep and cattle, which revealed toxic and hormonal substances, as the Union has not as yet been informed of the results of these analyses.

The Union’s representative stated that it is high time to open laboratories for the analysis of the blood of the livestock by the Ministry of Agriculture as this issue is paramount today because the consumers’ health is at stake.

In this context, the “Forem” or the National Commission for Health Promotion and Research Development’s Chairman Professor Mustapha Khiati warned that the deleterious meat of the infected sheep and cattle meant for Eid ritual sacrifice could cause the loss of fertility in men, and could also unleash fetal birth defects in a direct relation with the sexual predisposition.

This was confirmed by the representative of the National Veterinary Union.
