Carelessness kills 83 infants in hospital everyday
Algerian health ministry Thursday set up a commission to investigate in the rise of death rate as 30,000 infants die every year and 83 everyday, Echorouk has learnt.Minister Abdelmalek Boudiaf ordered the commission to find out reasons behind the death rate increase among infants in hospitals and clinics.This comes as a report was submitted to the minister about carelessness in hospitals especially in rural towns.According to the same sources, the annual report said 80 percent of deaths are reported among infants aged under 1 year.Chief of the National Organization for Health Promotion Mustapha Khiati said the establishment of the commission was late. “The annual death rate is serious. Dead infants represent 35.92 percent of deaths due to treatment type.“Death rate rise reached a record level compared to other countries. In the UAE, a total of 12,000 infants die per year. In Algeria, the highest death rate among infants is reported in rural towns,” said Professor Khiati.He added that the deaths are due to the lack of training among general practionners and specialists in delivery. Carelessness among midwives and the lack of competence caused deaths as well.
