The Director General of National Security (DGSN), Major General Abdelghani Hamel said Thursday in Oran, that the registration of some cases of child abductions in Algeria is not a “phenomenon”, as he put it.

“The few child abduction cases handled must not be construed as a phenomenon,” said Major General Hamel to the press at the end of his two-day inspection visit to Oran province in western Algeria.

“We have recorded cases of kidnapping and child abduction attempts, the majority of them have been solved by the police services,” he said while noting that a number of stringent measures have been taken as part of the consolidation of prevention against all forms of harm to children.

The Director General of National Security listed a number of remedial measures including those of enlargement and strengthening of child protection cells across the country’s provincial security services.

“In order to further bolster such a deterrence against this type of crime like all other forms of crimes, we must modernize the tool of prevention and control with institutional cooperation and the full involvement of all actors in society, including the mosques, education sector , civil society and the media”, Mr Abdelghani Hamel argued.

In addition, Major General Hamel said that the relentless fight against petty crime or delinquency is one of the priorities of national security services, noting that such criminality “reduces the actions of the state and induces a feeling of insecurity among the citizens”.

In this connection, the DGSN Chief underlined that important steps are being taken to fight against this type of crime for the sake of the citizens’ safety.
