French Parliament: First Written Question About Algeria Regarding “Harkis” and “Assas”

The new French National Assembly, which stems from the parliamentary polls of last June, has devoted its first written question to Algeria and notably to the subject of the (“Harkis”) and the civil servants (“Assas”) in the Algerian war of liberation deriving from the offices of the specialized administrative teams.

The written question at the new French Parliament, representing the 15th legislative term, by the French  Deputy Louis Aliot (representing the Eastern Province of Pyrenees, on 18 July 2017), was commissioned by the French Ministry of the Armed Forces.

The MP’s question pointed out that the latter, and many who have been deported from Algeria, have been living unfairly for years in France and demanded that “the French Government clarify what it would like to do to honor them and provide them with decent living conditions, especially since most of them are now around 80 years old”.

The assignment of the first written question on Algeria in the French Parliament reflects the continuation of nostalgia about the period of French colonization of Algeria for a large segment of the French people, despite the passage of more than half a century of Algeria’s hard-won independence after untold human sacrifices.
