Algeria’s army chief of staff Ahmed Gaid Salah Wednesday called on Sahrawi Sahel countries to be more vigilant and respect their commitments to fight terrorism.

“We can say that security situation in our region is improving progressively thanks to efforts made on political and military levels. Yet, transcontinental terror greed obliges us to stay vigilant and reinforce cooperation. This needs appropriate measures as part of efficient cooperation based on a common strategy,” Gaid Salah said in a meeting Mali, Mauritania and Niger’s army chief of staffs.

“The strategy should be reactivated to restore adequate conditions for social and economic development and the stability of our region. All the wanted efficiency can not be reached without taking in account security aspect,” he added.

Speaking about the Algerian army experience, Gaid Salah said the National Popular Army’s acquired experience in fighting terrorism can be exploited by neighbour countries.

He believes that security situation in the region needs more vigilance and the reinforcement of cooperation.

“The National Popular Army will remain determined in fighting terror and coordinating its efforts with its neighbors. My country mobilized considerable means to keep watch on borders and protect them against any threat. That prevented many terrorists from smuggling arms and ammunition to the countries in the region. The army played a role in ensuring the safety of the region’s borders. That had a positive impact on its stability,” he said.
