These new procedures aim to provide red meat with the quantity and quality that are required by Algerians, as Latin America countries are top of these countries that will provide this product.
Sources from the Agriculture and Rural Development told Echorouk that Algeria officially resorted to five foreign countries, which are France, Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil and India, in order to import red meat during Ramadan 2015, after it granted the licence for private and public importers, and it created a special commission that is composed of veterinaries and specialists in veterinary health control, to analyse the quality and conformity of meat that is imported by Algeria from foreign countries, and whether it respected the health standards that are applied at the level of the International Organization of Animals’ Health.
“Ministry took all the special measures of the holy month to provide red meat with the quantity and quality that acquired by Algerians to cover the deficit, and because the meat that is imported could break the market’s prices, especially since they notice a crazy increase during the holy month. It sent special committees to these countries which were proposed by private importers at the ministry, to get the import licence to know the extent of meat conformity to safety and health standards”.
