Chairman of the National Advisory Committee for the Protection and Promotion of Human Rights warned of the fate that awaits Algerian prisoners in Iraq, especially in light of the intransigence of the Iraqi authorities and the deterioration of the security situation in the country.

Farouk Ksentini, expressed concern about the fate of the Algerian nationals in Iraqi jails, especially in light of “the intransigence of the Iraqi authorities and the deterioration of the conditions of security.”

Ksentini told APS that he had received three days ago a call from one of these prisoners, who confirmed that they are in “continuous danger” and expressed fears of the “worst” results, especially after the attack in the prison of Abou Gharib and Taji, in an attempt to release some detainees, and resulted in the escape of more than 500 prisoners.

“Despite the big efforts of the Foreign Ministry of Foreign, but the Iraqi authorities continue to insist on its position, and the strange thing is that they were lenient with other countries such as Tunisia and Saudi Arabia. We hope things will get better in the near future”.

Ten Algerian prisoners are detained in the Iraqi authorities after the death sentence against another prisoner before months ago, and most of them faced charges on entering the Iraqi borders illegally, while two of them were involved in alleged terrorism without direct or confirmed participation in violence.

In another context, Ksentini asserted that the seven Algerians detained in the U.S. Guantanamo prison “are not guilty of any crime” and their presence in detention for years without trial “is strange and arbitrary.”

“U.S. forces have transferred detainees to Guantanamo prison, where they spent years without trial. They should be released as soon as possible.”
