Messahel removes all doubts about Algeria’s position on Western Sahara issue
Minister of Maghrebin affairs, African Union and the Arab League Abdelkader Messahel Wednesday said Algeria has not changed its position about the Western Sahara issue since 1963. “It continued supporting the settlement of the conflict as part of decolonization and self-determination.”
“Algeria’s position is in conformity with the UN resolutions. It stipulate that the solution will be reached through Sahrawi people’s will for self-determination,” Messahel told a national radio channel.
Speaking about Algeria’s possible involvement in the conflict, the minister said all the Security Council’s resolutions and talks held by the Polisario Front and Morocco were direct under the UN cover.
Messahel’s remarks come to confirm Algeria’s support in the Western Sahara issue as part of liberation movements.
Earlier, unofficial politicians made ambiguous remarks which raised doubts about Algeria’s position on the Sahrawi-Moroccan conflict.
Sahrawi foreign minister Mohamed Salem Ould Salek told Echorouk Sahrawi people are confident in Algeria’s support for self-determination.
