The President of the Algerian Red Crescent Ms. Saida Benhabiles described Morocco’s adverse policy towards hapless Syrian refugees stranded at the border level as tantamount to genocide and the worst atrocities meted out by certain regimes.

In a statement made to “Echorouk”, Ms. Benhabiles said that Morocco abused the unfortunate Syrian refugees and did not provide them with the simplest means, that is with no shelter, no cover, no food, according to the recorded testimonies of the stranded refugees.

“As a humanitarian organization and a citizen, I express my pride in my belonging to this country Algeria and I thank President Abdelaziz Bouteflika for his recent humanitarian decision to open the closed borders for a humanitarian cause.

This is in line with the President’s decision to open the closed border for humanitarian reasons and in keeping with International humanitarian law “, she stressed.

Ms Saida Benhabiles further condemned the tragic situation of refugees on the western border. Children and women are being left in the lurch by the Moroccan authorities in arid desert under 40 degrees Celsius during the holy month of fasting of Ramadan. Unfortunately, she noted, Morocco has deepened their ordeal in blatant violation of basic humanitarian laws.

She also wondered to this effect about the reasons and the backgrounds that make the Moroccan regime exploit the human tragedy of these Syrian refugees for purely political purposes.

“Morocco has always sought to exploit the tragedies of human peoples for sheer political purposes,” Ms Benhabiles underscored.

“We have two things to undertake: “to open the common border to facilitate the transit of refugees to Algeria, or to receive them and take care of them as required by humane treatment,” she added.

A representative of the Algerian Red Crescent revealed for his part the preparations undertaken by Algeria and its readiness to receive these refugees by providing the reception center with air-conditioning and comfortable amenities in addition to clothing and food and even health coverage through the provision of general and specialist doctors as well as psychologists, under the supervision of the UNHCR.

These preparations by the Algerian side were praised by the UNHCR representative who moved to the border area to visit the shelters and thanked the Algerian Crescent Red for the well-meaning humanitarian services it provides in this regard.

It should be noted that Morocco’s baffling decision to refuse to deport these stranded Syrian refugees into Algerian soil as requested by the Algerian Government sparked off a wave of anger and dissatisfaction among Syrian citizens through manifold recorded videos on social networking sites.
