Reliable sources reported that a protest rally was staged on Sunday in the vicinity of the Moroccan border-crossing of Zoudj Baghal adjacent to the advanced Center “Colonel Abbas” border area of Maghnia involving young Moroccans who vehemently demanded the re-opening of the Algerian-Moroccan border, closed since October 1994.

The same sources told “Echorouk” that this is the second protest rally to be held in the area over the past few days with the politically-motivated Moroccan protesters hitting out against the steadfast and clear-cut stand of Algeria regarding the decolonization of the Moroccan-occupied Western Sahara in line with relevant UN resolutions and international legality.

Ostensibly, at the covert behest of the ruling Makhzen, the protesters chanted slogans in support of Moroccan occupation of Western Sahara and against the Algerian authorities’ decision to keep the Algeria-Moroccan border closed on account of the unabated drugs’ outpouring from Morocco into Algerian territory in blatant violation of the rules of good neighbourliness and international laws prohibiting strictly such drugs’ smuggling practices.

Political analysts surmise to this effect that these type of makeshift protests staged by “recruited individuals” along the common border were part of the Moroccan Makhzen’s covert and desperate maneuvers aimed at applying leverage on the Algerian authorities to make them alter their position on the vexed Western Sahara issue, an illusory contingency which has no chance of happening given Algeria’s long-standing and all-out support for all just causes around the world.
