Relevant authorities received requests from girls and girls’ associations, about the recruitment of women to perform the national service, and fight in the military experience similar to women in many countries that have adopted this experience and make it a success.
Echorouk sources said that the proposal to open recruitment to girls, includes several points like the selection of recruitment centers in major cities like Algiers, Oran, and Annaba as a first stage, as the duration of national service for women will be determined with 6 months instead of 12 months, as they will benefit from a monthly grant – if the project will be passed – like the young men recruits and the right to take advantage of allowing them to meet their different needs during the period of their performance of the national service duty.
Same sources added, that the recruitment, according to these proposals will not be mandatory for the girls who want, after the end of the performance of the duty of national service, to join the ranks of the National People’s Army, or work the Ministry of National Defense branches, taking into account that they satisfy the conditions that are specified under the legislation and regulation in the service.
“This proposal comes after the concerned authorities received many requests by girls who want to perform the duty of national service, as the Prime Minister, Abdelmalek Sellal, received in a previous unexpected visit to Oran last year, a demand by a woman who sent a direct request to the head of the executive branch, asking for the application of a compulsory performance of the national service for Algerian women, especially since the Algerian constitution, is considered the fundamental law of the state and it came in one of its articles and exactly in Article 13, which said; “State institutions aimed at ensuring the equality of all citizens in rights and duties by removing the obstacles which hinder the progress of the individual’s personality and hinders the actual participation in the political, economic, social and cultural life”, which shows clearly that the national rights are equal between the sexes, so the national service is a national duty and women have the right to perform this duty if they express desire to do this.
This proposal – according to observers- if it will be realized, it will raise the national service level, and place Algeria in the ranks of the developed countries, as it will provide a new add to the National Armed Forces, especially since women stormed the security corps in all specialties, and obtained high ranks thanks to their efficiency, especially in light of the special care and qualifications that the Army Institution gives to women.
