No Accurate Statistics about Battered Women in Algeria, Solidarity Minister says

Draft Law that is amended and supplemented to the Penal Code and which contained new measures to protect women from all forms of violence, is currently at the National Assembly for discussion during the current autumn session, National Solidarity, Family and Women’s issues Minister, Mounia Mouslem Si Amer, said, on the sidelines of a meeting in Algiers, that was devoted to study the manual content for the women’s better social professional reintegration, that this legal project was vetoed by the People’s National Assembly in March, will be put to discussion and vote by the National Assembly, during the current autumn session.”

“This project is a new element to immunize women against all forms of violence and to maintain the family cohesion. Among the most important measures that were provided for in the amended draft law, there was the introduction of several articles about the protection of women from all forms of violence and abuse, verbal or psychological violence, with tougher sanctions if it comes to a minor.”

“There are no accurate statistics about the existence of the number of battered women in Algeria, except for those prepared by the General Directorate of National Security, which derived from battered women’s complaints records.
