Algeria’s energy minister Said Khabri Wednesday blamed officials at national oil group Sonatrach for the absence of efficiency and responsiveness. He warned that punishment measures would be taken.

“The government expects a lot from Sonatrach. Management methods should be reviewed,” the minister told newly appointed vice-CEO at the company’s headquarters in Algiers.

“Our partners complain of the absence of efficiency. There is a delay in almost all the projects and deadlines are not respected at all,” he added with anger.

According to the minister, energy sector hindered Algeria’s overall growth. “This is not acceptable at all. Punishment measures will be taken.”

“It is unbelievable to witness hydrocarbons production fall and do nothing. As you know, prices have gone down but we can control production,” he said.

Speaking to the newly appointed officials, the minister said “the new officials will start their job quickly. All the foreign companies directors we received complain of the absence of efficiency and responsiveness at Sonatrach.”

International arbitration with Saipem does not scare us

Asked about international arbitration requested by Italy’s Saipem on 3 of its projects in Algeria, the minister said Sonatrach can defend itself.

“Justice will decide in the case,” he added.
