There’s No War In Algeria … Why Do Illegal Migrants (Harraga) Come From This Country?

Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini published a contentious tweet on his official Twitter account that sparked off controversy over incoming Algerian illegal immigrants (Harraga) and from other countries on board a rescue ship allowed of late by the Rome authorities to enter one of its ports in the south of the country.
“He listed the nationalities of the Harraga or illegal immigrants aboard the “Dichotti” boat, who were taken over to another vessel after a rescue operation carried out by coast guards in Libyan waters,” wrote Minister Matteo Salveni, a member of the far-right Northern League, known for its strong hostility to immigrants. .
The Italian interior Minister attached a list of the “hijackers” on board the diverted vessel, including 23 from Pakistan, 4 from Algeria and 4 from Morocco, as well as from Bangladesh, Chad, Egypt, Ghana, Libya, Nepal, Palestine, Sudan and Yemen.
“Two of the troublemakers on board hail from Ghana and Sudan … in any of the countries mentioned, there is a war going on,” he said.
Matteo’s frenzied and sweeping statement touched off a bitter controversy in Italy on the grounds that a senior official in the post of interior Minister does not know that the war is taking place in Yemen, Libya and other countries away from the list that he published.
Meanwhile, Italian Coast Guard patrols rescued 33 Algerians off the coast of Sardinia on two boats, including an adult woman, bringing the number of arrivals there since early July to more than 100, according to local media outlets in the island.
The island’s authorities are meanwhile in full swing to complete the achievement of the 2,000-seat capacity “Makomar” prison to turn it into a detention center for Algerian illegal migrants, pending their direct deportation to Algeria.
