Chairman of the Algerian League for Human Rights Hassan Zahwane said 15,000 protests take place in Algeria per year while the number is on the rise due to a “political and social blockage in a consuming and non-productive society.”

“Algerians are living in tension due to protests and the absence of effective solutions to their problems. In the previous years, the government bought social peace by distributing houses and employment loans. Yet, Algerian economy faces an unprecedented blockage due to hydrocarbons oil fall. This raised panic among officials,” said Zahwane.

“Tension on different levels can hit Algeria’s stability. Because of that, we submitted a defense speech to Ahmed Ouyahia as part of consultations on the constitutional amendment,” he added.
