According to the London-based “Ashark Al Awsat” newspaper, the seat of Syria at the Arab League allotted to the Syrian opposition coalition during the Doha Summit in 2013 has now become a sticking point with several Arab states threatening to take action if the opposition Syrian coalition will be maintained in Syria’s seat during the upcoming Sharm el-Sheikh Arab Summit planned for the end of this month.

Diplomatic sources quoted by the newspaper said  that if the Syrian opposition will cling to Syria’s seat at the Arab League, this will negatively impact on the search for a viable political solution to the Syrian crisis with the sidelining of the Damascus regime which should be part and part of any political breakthrough.

The second element in this vexed equation is the reluctance of some Arab States and the overt opposition of  others including Algeria to the decision to award the seat to the Syrian opposition coalition, arguing to this effect that if Syria’s seat remains vacant, it will be the best alternative for averting a bitter quandary.

If such an option is followed by the parties concerned, this will spare the forthcoming Arab summit useless wrangling and an acrimonious debate about this contentious issue, according to the same sources.
