Well-informed sources told Echorouk that the Algerian Air Force went into action on Tuesday by chasing away a foreign military plane which had breached Algerian airspace along the border with neighbouring Libya.

The sources also indicated that the intruding military aircraft had been forced to fly back to where it came from,  stressing that the Libyan plane of a “Beech craft 300 type” had taken off from the airport of Maâtika which is  currently under the control of the Tripoli revolutionary council’s militias.

This incident occurred in the southern part of the Algerian-Libyan border and the Algerian Air Force issued stern warnings to the pilot of the Libyan military aircraft enjoining him to quit immediately the Algerian airspace or face a fire power, the same sources added.

The National Popular Army (ANP) has intensified its troop deployment on the border with Libya, using modern and sophisticated military equipment including surveillance planes able to fly, up to 12 hours non-stop, over the border region.

These beefed-up security measures are designed to protect the national territory from any nefarious contingency like the infiltration of arms, terrorist elements or smugglers into Algeria due to the chaotic situation now besetting Libya.
