Algerians consumed $3 b of sugar, milk in 11 months

Milk and sugar imports increased, and food import bill reached $2.66 billion dollars in the first 11 months of 2014.
National Office of Statistics, which belongs to the customs explained that the imports of milk powder and fatty foods that are derived from milk reached $1.84 billion from January to November 2014, compared to $1.04 billion in 2013, recording a rise of 77%.
Imported quantities of milk and derivatives reached 370.365 tons compared to 257.963 tons in 2013, as it increased by 43.5%.
According to statistics of Agriculture and Rural Development Ministry, Algeria produced 3.5 billion liters of fresh milk annually and imports from 1.5 to 2 billion liters, while the needs of national consumption reached more than 5 billion liters per year.
According to customs statistics, sugar imports retreated in value, but increased in quantity between January to the end of November 2014, and the value of sugar imports reached 825.15 million dollars against 858.82 million dollars during the same period of 2013.
