Biometric driver's license, identification cards postponed until further notice

Interior Ministry was unable to adopt electronic biometric identification cards, and decided to postpone the adoption of the biometric driving licenses to an indefinite date, after it was scheduled to be adopted officially on last February, thing which would postpone the work with the only national serial number for all Algerians, as a reference base to extract any administrative document from the various bodies, despite the government’s ratification of the file and the issuance of the executive decree since five years.
Echorouk learned from official sources that the Interior and Local groups Ministry have not been able to provide logistic support for the Wilayas and equipping the departments’ services until issuing the first biometric identification card, and the first driver’s license with the same standards during the last February, as it was brought by the Interior Minister, Tayeb Belaiz.
Same sources attributed the main cause to breaching the deadline of the project to purely technical problems.
“International commitment of Algeria towards the International Civil Aviation Organization, will impose focus on the Interior Ministry to end the project of renewing passports without opening new projects on the various services of the departments, and technical center in charge of the project, especially since the deadlines that are given to Algeria inadvertently for commitment and adjustment are only 7 months.”
Project of biometric identification card and driving license magnetic cards are set within the framework of the strategy and the modernization of governance structures that are designed to facilitate the extraction of various administrative documents and improve the public service that is provided to the citizen, on the grounds that the electronic biometric national ID card would allow to be Algerian citizen resident in Algeria and abroad, serial number and a single national and personal which to extract any document in all departments, without going back to the training of an administrative file as is the situation currently.
If the renewal of 5 million classic passports’ project was postponed, it was decided to launch the 10 million biometric identification cards project.
Echorouk sources explained that the postponement of issuing the first driving magnetic license card due to non-completion of the preparation of national card of this document, that will allow citizens to extract it from any district across the country Wilayas, despite deciding about some of the technical aspects that related to the project, and choose the driving license model which is scheduled to be in the form of a magnetic card that contains a slide which includes all information that is related to the driver.
