Education status will be amended if ethics code is signed, says minister

Algerian education minister Nouria Benghebrit said education staff’s status will not be modified only if independent unions sign a code of ethics. “I will not amend the status under pressure and without trust atmosphere,” she told reporters.

The code includes a clause which obliges social partners not to go on strike. The education unions rejected it and continued their unlimited strike.

Earlier in a meeting with union chiefs, the minister committed to make changes to the status and fixed the date of March 2^nd to establish a commission in charge of the process.

More than 80 percent of teachers in different schools in Algeria are still on strike. They warned not to stop their movement until their requests are met.
