The Ministry of Religious Affairs and Endowments has conveyed an instruction to all state departments calling on imams or religious preachers to unite the upcoming Friday sermon by devoting it to a sound appraisal of President Bouteflika’s decision regarding the enshrinement of 12th January of each year as a national holiday coinciding with the beginning of the new Amazigh year or Yennayer celebrations.

“We are honored to ask you to dedicate the forthcoming Friday religious sermon on 12 January 2018 to talk about the issue of the advent of the new Amazigh year,” the Ministry statement said.

“The instruction stated that its aim is to contribute to the promotion of the Amazigh language through advocacy and remembrance of the historical dimension of national identity through the platforms of the mosques across Algeria, it added.

“The conveyance of this instruction to the mosques in the country is aimed at softening the general atmosphere, away from the dry political discourse,” said the head of the Imams’ Union Mr. Djelloul  Hadjimi.

“This proposal which provides for valuing the presidential decision designed to enhance the Tamazight language, is not odd because it is closely connected to the nation’s culture and national identity, as it will further lead to the consolidation of national unity and cohesion”, he underlined in this respect.
