In a move described as the largest border mobilization yet, Algeria is sending thousands of troops to secure the eastern and southern frontiers to thwart the infiltration of terrorists into Algerian territory.

“Algeria is making a considerable contribution in the fight against the scourge of terrorism and organized crime,” Algerian Foreign Minister Lamamra was quoted as saying by local news media outlets.

“The army and security forces are jointly working to strengthen national security and are aiming for the country to become a source of stability for neighbouring and sisterly countries,” the minister added.

Reliable sources told “Echorouk” that the Algerian troops tightened security measures this week on the eastern border after the Tunisian army conducted a large security operation in the area of the Souloum Mount west of the capital Tunis.

The leadership of the Algerian army declared a state of maximum alert and transferred additional ground forces to the border with Tunisia including armoured units backed by attack helicopters and Special Forces.

It described the move as the most extensive mobilization of military forces to date on the eastern border, in anticipation of any infiltration of terrorists from Tunisia.

The deployment consisted of more than 7 000 ANP soldiers made up of Special Forces, infantry, and the gendarmerie, the same sources added.

A direct line of communication was also opened between the leadership of Algerian ground and air operations and their Tunisian counterparts, in order to accelerate the sharing of intelligence.
