Interference in Sahel countries’ domestic affairs and coordination with the EU’s nations is the best solution to put Algeria away from defending the Western Sahara issue, according to Morocco.

An official document shows that Morocco asked the European Council to share interests about the Sahel region and solve problems.

The document is a letter sent by Morocco’s general consulate in Strasbourg to its foreign minister.

It included a proposed project about the Sahel region and Morocco’s importance to solve existing problems.

It says the Moroccan Kingdom has capacities and support from the European Council. The proposed project would lead to a “real partnership” towards the region and France would “intervene strongly.”

It added that Algeria will try to exploit the European space of 47 member countries to adopt the “separation thesis.”

Morocco believes that it is necessary to foil such an initiative which can “threaten” its interests, says the letter.

It proposed to stop Algerian from reaching that goal and sensitizing the European Council about terrorist threats in the region.

According to the document, the Polisario Front is an armed group which represents a danger and responsible for smuggling.

Morocco considers its proposed project as an opportunity shed light on the threat on the region. That needs to call on the Kingdom to play a “pivotal role in those issues in view to its geographic location next to Europe.”

The letter also says Morocco has big institution and expertise in terms of democratic transition and good governance. Because of that, it can help the Sahel countries to face their internal problems.

Morocco hailed the European Council’s credibility, saying it can have an impact on some countries which support the Western Sahara issue.

It also said countries who have “ambiguous” positions should clarify them.

The same document said the proposed project would enable Morocco to transfer its expertise as part of cooperation with the European Council. It would also enable to find out new ways for partnership between the Kingdom, the EU and the Sahel countries.

The Moroccan general consul proposed to adopt the initiative as an annual forum in Rabat in presence of the EU’s members and a ministerial committee.

The document also said France can play an important role along with the role of two governmental representatives and civil society.

It asked the European Council to fund the project.
