Two international reports, both American and British, have praised Algeria’s policy in combating illegal immigration, stressing that it is facing this troubling phenomenon with “its own potential” .

The two recent reports came after a report issued by Spanish news agency EF, entitled: “Madrid criticizes the pursuit of illegal immigration from Algeria”.

A report issued by the American Center for Strategic and International Studies (IISS) at the end of last September under the heading “Morocco as a source of migration” states that Algeria has become a destination for immigrants not only from sub-Saharan Africa, fleeing from crises, wars and social deprivation, but also for European citizens such as Spanish, Italians and French.

The report, compiled by the Center for “American Thinking”, confirms that the unprecedented reason for migration of citizens from Europe to Algeria in particular, mainly due to the “exarcebation of the economic crisis in the old continent, thus making Algeria an immigration destination for many Europeans as well, thanks to the country’s stability, especially in terms of security, and the economic dynamism witnessed over the past few years.

The report of the American Center for Strategic and International Studies contradicts the warnings issued by the federal government in Washington about the security situation in Algeria and the warnings it has repeatedly issued to its citizens to avoid visiting a number of areas in the national territory.

The report pointed to the dilemma posed by illegal immigration, especially for the people of sub-Saharan Africa, and said: “Algeria, by its geographic location, has become the most vulnerable Maghreb country, which faces its own potential”.

The BBC reported that Algeria is “the country that fights illegal immigration in North Africa best, thanks to a range of measures, including coercive laws. The report notes that” a law passed in Algeria in 2009 stipulated that any attempt to leave the country illegally shall be punishable by imprisonment for six months.

The illegal migrants’ smugglers are for their part sentenced to 20 years in prison”.

The British media outlets, which believe that this legislation “reflects the firm determination of the Algerian authorities to confront this problem persistently, by involving all available means,” while noting that “this law did not fully stem from this problem”.

Sources told “Echorouk” that the report issued by the Spanish news agency two days ago under the title “Madrid criticizes the march of illegal immigration from Algeria”, which spoke of Spanish concern about the recent “intensive and worrying” arrival of a group of illegal immigrants on boats into its shores, especially in the region of Murcia from Algeria, carries “a lot of prejudices”.

Echorouk has been appraised by reliable sources that there is a Moroccan “touch” in the report of the Spanish news agency, which spoke about a meeting that will bring together Spanish Interior Minister Juan Ignacio Zuido this week with the Ambassador of Algeria accredited in Madrid to ask the country to beef up the naval monitoring operations along its coasts.

As a recall, in recent days, several makeshift boats carrying hundreds of illegal immigrants converged towards Spain”.
