Algerian Energy Minister Chakib Khelil

Algerian minister of energy and mines Chakib Khelil said a Russian team of nuclear experts would visit Algeria next month with the aim of training Algerian engineers on nuclear-related energy matters.

Chakib khelil told the national radio that Algeria was in need of nuclear energy to build nuclear reactors “so we have to possess the human resources to achieve that.”

Algeria started an energy planning program with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) two years ago, he said, and this program would allow “us to determine when we have to develop the nuclear reactors.”

Khelil said Algeria has only two small nuclear reactors, one generating three megawatts and the other producing 15 megawatts.
Algeria signed with Russia last year a special memorandum of understanding to develop nuclear energy in the country and to foster a partnership in exploration, drilling and marketing.
