Serguei Lavrov: “We Follow Efforts Of Neighboring Countries To Help Libya”

Egypt, Tunisia and Algeria are playing an important role in resolving the situation of the Libyan crisis, the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, said on Monday.

Lavrov said during a session of the Valdai International Discussion Club in Moscow, which was held this year under the title “Russia in the Middle East: Playing on all fields”;  “We see the role that is played by Egypt, Tunisia and Algeria in helping Libya to resolve its situation”, Russia Today website published.

The Russian Foreign Minister expressed Russia’s support for all those who try to contribute to the Libyan settlement and the efforts of Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia and the Arab League, confirming the need to secure the leading role of the United Nations, which will coordinate all these endeavors.

“Russia supports the efforts of UN envoy to Libya, Ghassan Salama, to achieve stability in this country”.

Lavrov confirmed Moscow’s support for the resumption of dialogue between Tobrouk and Tripoli and mediation efforts, which must be led and coordinated by the United Nations.

“We met with the UN special envoy, Ghassane Salama in Munich and we confirmed our support for his initiatives, road maps and the difficult dialogue between Tobrouk and Tripoli”.

“We see that the agreements were reached under the auspices of the French President, Emmanuel Macron, in last July and its implementation begun and now they are faltering”.

In an interview with the French-language daily newspaper L’Expression, Igor Belyaev, the Russian ambassador to Algeria, said that Moscow and Algeria are making joint efforts to support international mediation that aimed at finding a solution to the crisis in Libya, based on a comprehensive dialogue between the parties, away from any external interference in the affairs of the country.

The Russian Ambassador to Algeria, Igor Belyaev, said that Moscow and Algeria are in constant contact with all political parties in Libya to reach a political solution and renounce the language of arms and power, adding that any Libyan agreement to amend some of the terms of the Sekhirat agreement is a booster of the peace process.

“The situation in Libya is very worrying for us. We hope that stability will return to this country where we have historical and traditional ties. All efforts to reach a peaceful solution have failed so far”.

“There is an opportunity for Russia to contribute effectively and positively to the establishment of peace and stability in Libya”.

“There are identical positions between Russia and Algeria on the Libyan crisis, especially as both countries are in contact with all the Libyan parties and encourage them to sit around the negotiating table to begin the search for a consensual solution and renounce the use of force and weapons”.

“There is a basis for these negotiations, which is the Sekhirat agreement, and we understand the willingness of the parties to the conflict to amend it. If all sides agree to amend some of its provisions to reach a compromise solution, this will only stimulate the peace process”.
